Why is there no single price for a tattoo?
Two tattoos with similar dimensions can require very different amounts of work. A small symbol with a few lines is not the same as a detailed portrait, a custom anatomical composition or a piece that must connect to existing ink. Design preparation, revisions, tattooing time and materials all affect the quote.
That is why a price-per-centimeter calculator is rarely reliable. Size matters, but it does not describe complexity.
What usually affects the quote?
- size and level of detail,
- style, such as linework, black and grey or realism,
- placement and how the design follows the body,
- color and the amount of shading,
- whether the work is new, an extension or a cover-up,
- the expected number and length of sessions.
If the requested design is too small for its details, the artist may recommend a larger format or a simpler composition. That conversation protects the readability of the finished tattoo.
What should you send for a quote?
Include the subject, approximate dimensions in centimeters, placement and preferred style. Add two or three reference images. If the tattoo needs to work around existing ink, include a clear photo of the whole area in natural light.
References communicate direction; they are not instructions to copy another artist’s tattoo. Explain what you like about each image: the layout, contrast, shading or a particular element.
Do you need an in-person consultation?
A simple, clearly described project can often be assessed from the form and photos. Sleeves, larger compositions, cover-ups and work connected to existing tattoos may need an in-person consultation. It gives the artist a chance to check scale, movement and the realistic session plan.
If you receive a range rather than a fixed number, treat it as an estimate based on the information supplied. Changes to size, placement or detail can change the final quote.
Price is only one part of choosing an artist
Look for a portfolio that includes work close to your preferred style. Check composition, line quality, shading and how clearly the studio communicates before the appointment. The lowest quote is not automatically the best fit for a permanent piece.
